The library is honored to host a summer exhibition remembering the life, art, and teaching of Alex McCarty. This exhibition celebrates the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Alex, a beloved Makah artist and educator who dedicated his life to preserving, teaching, and reimagining the rich cultural traditions of his people. Through his mastery of carving, painting, and printmaking, Alex created a bridge between ancestral wisdom and contemporary expression, ensuring that Makah artistic traditions would continue to flourish for generations to come.

We invite you to experience this collection as Alex would have wanted—with curiosity, respect, and an appreciation for the profound connections between art, culture, and community that define the Makah artistic tradition.

Visitors are welcome to view this exhibit during the library's open hours through September 5th.

In addition, we will be hosting an exhibit reception on Sunday, July 20, from 1-4pm. All are welcome.

Reception Details:

  • 1-2pm: Enjoy refreshments and community
  • 2-3pm: Share memories and stories of Alex
  • 3-4pm: Explore the exhibit
