Environmental Impact Statements & Assessments

What is an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)?

The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) established a national framework for protecting the environment, and it requires that "all branches of government give proper consideration to the environment prior to undertaking any major federal action that significantly affects the environment." Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) and Environmental Assessments (EAs) are reports that aim to evaluate the potential impacts of a project on the environment.
