Anatomy of a Call Number

Print books in our collection use Library of Congress classification, an alphanumeric system that groups books by subject. Every book is assigned a call number, which indicates its subject matter, author, and year of publication.

In the example below, Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring by Brad Gooch is shelved in Fine Arts (N) within the section pertaining to artists and art history. The second two lines refer to the artist (H348 = Haring) and author (G66 = Gooch). The final line indicates the year of publication (2024).

Photo of library books on shelf with outline of one book's call number is titled "Anatomy of a Call Number" The call number is N6537 (first two lines: subject) .H348 G66 (second line(s): artist, author) 2024 (last line: publication date).
