How to Save the World in 100 Words

“For me—it is the realization that I cannot save the world.
The world is neither time nor money.
For me—it is that thing in front of me:
The man in prison for a horrible crime
     who has become my brother
My neighbor’s sons who talk football to me
     over the back fence
The yellow jackets who have made their home by my deck
All the things I say I don’t have time to do but really
don't have time to don’t do
For me—it is the joy of being alive
For me—it is the living

I clock this in at 99 words. I wonder what I missed.”

Giovanni, Nikki. “How to Save the World in 100 Words.” Bicycles: Love Poems, William Morrow, 2009, p. 61.

I wish I knew the 100 words that might save the world. Nikki found 99 of them – so maybe we just need to find that last one? And hey, this is a library, it must be in here somewhere.

If you wanted to come in and look for it, you might start with the display we have up celebrating Nikki Giovanni herself. Or perhaps you’d peruse the nearby shelves by the stairwell, where we have even more books commemorating Black History Month. In case it’s hidden among the course readings assigned this quarter, you might also check out the books in our Course Materials on Open Reserve section.

And in case you already know the word (for you, for all of us) or have come up with your own 100 words, or even more, then we would invite you to come and share those words with us at our Writers’ Open Mic, coming up on March 13 in the Library Underground. Any words you can bring to share are welcome. Alone, maybe none of us has the right 100 words, but together we might be able to begin piecing them together.

Got some words checked out from us? Most library materials are due back on March 21, 2025. Return or renew them before they are due! Items may be returned inside the library or via the library drop box located outside Evans Hall. Items may be renewed online or by giving us a call at (360) 867-6580.

Library Resources & Services at a Glance

You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown

The library is ecstatic to continue its support for The Evergreen Theatre Club by offering tickets to their upcoming show, ‘You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,’ with performances on February 27, 28, and March 1.

We are giving away 40 tickets total (10 for each show). All you need to do is come in and see us at the library’s circulation desk and let us know how many tickets you’d like and for which show. Showtimes are:

  • Thursday, February 27, 7pm
  • Friday, February 28, 7pm
  • Saturday, March 1, 3pm (Understudy Performance)
  • Saturday, March 1, 7pm

Performances have a 2-hour run time with a 15 minute intermission. All shows take place on campus, in the Recital Hall, COM 107.

The library’s supply of tickets is first-come, first-served, and once they are gone, they are gone! If we run out of tickets for the show you’d like to see, you may purchase tickets directly at the door, or ahead of time on the Evergreen Theatre Club website.

Please note that since the library is not open on Saturdays, the last day to come in and get tickets from us will be on Friday, February 28, before 5pm.
