“Tween summer’s fall and autumn’s rise
When still there’s light, but darkening skies,
and leaves afall to earth disguise:
there I will await you.”

- Ahniwa Ferrari, 8/12/2024 (because sometimes it is easier to write a poem then find one)

Though fall is yet a month and more away, on days like these I can feel that summer has turned away, and is now slowly receding. I’m always surprised, and always surprised to be surprised. Every year, summers are endless. Every year, over far too soon.

As for the library, our summer hours continue through September 7. After that, we will have more limited hours during break and Orientation Week, and then will open more expansively with the beginning of Fall Quarter on September 30. That said, we remain open 6 days per week, Sunday – Friday, so please come in and say ‘Hey!’ Now is a great time to familiarize yourself with our spaces, resources, and services, before things get too busy. Get started by checking out our games collection, library of things, and course materials on open reserve.

Need an additional nudge to come visit? Read on to learn more about our resources as well as some of the cool exhibitions currently on display in the library, for a limited time only!

Queer Voices from the Rare Books Collection

A selection of rare books by queer artists and authors are currently on exhibit in the James F. Holly Rare Books Room from June 23 to September 6, 2024.

The selected titles span eight decades and a variety of formats, including photography books, artists books, poetry chapbooks, and zines. The earliest title is “The Book of Repulsive Women: 8 Rhythms and 5 Drawings” by American artist, illustrator, journalist, and writer Djuna Barnes. Evergreen owns an unsanctioned 1948 reprint of this scandalous poetry chapbook that was originally published in 1915 and sold for fifteen cents.

Also on display is a custom-printed roll of toilet paper that was created for an installation in a women’s bathroom by the queer women’s artist collective fierce pussy.

In the book “Are You a Boy or a Girl,” author Amy Ryken shares conversations they had with elementary school students regarding gender, and how children learn about sameness and differences in our current society.

And by pictures, of course, we mean graphic novels. Come check out our current book display, highlighting nonfiction graphic novels in the library’s collection, as well as some excellent exhibits submitted by Evergreen staff and students, available to view for a short time only!

Current on display:

  • From Evergreen student, Trinity Finley: “A series of post card and canvas paintings of my adventures in France with the Travel abroad program here at Evergreen.”

  • From Evergreen student, Red Cedar, aka Vague Omen: “Various collage and multimedia pieces. Each piece is inspired by either growing up near the Salish Sea, Queer humor and culture, marine biology, creative writing, and many are a combination of multiple.”
