Please note that the library will be closed during break week this year, from Saturday, November 18 through November 25. We will re-open for our regular hours on Sunday, November 26.

Library Resources & Services At A Glance

Call for Proposals: Exhibitions for Winter 2024

A little further down in this email you can learn more about the materials currently on display as well as some ‘open case’ events we’re holding in the coming weeks. But right now, right here, we’re letting you know that our form is now open to accept proposals for exhibitions to go in display during winter quarter. We accept proposals from current and former students, staff, faculty, and community members – yes, that’s pretty much everyone, but we are always especially excited to showcase work from current students.

You can learn more about the exhibit spaces that are available and find the proposal form linked on our Displays & Exhibitions guide, over here: https://libguides.evergreen.edu/displays/propose

Currently on Display: PSBA & Walter Hamady

Currently on display on the library’s main floor is the 12th Annual Members’ Exhibition of the Puget Sound Book Artists. This year the suggested theme is “Collaboration” and illustrates he organization’s efforts to build community throughout the region.

Learn more here: https://libguides.evergreen.edu/blog/2023PSBAExhibit

Open Case events for this display are coming up on November 5 & 13. More details below!

On display in the Rare Books Room we are spotlighting materials from Walter Hamady and the Perishable Press. Walter Hamady is an influential letterpress printer, book artist, papermaker, and collage artist. He launched the Perishable Press in 1964 and began to publish works that are expertly printed, whimsical, nonsensical, and sometimes tongue-in-cheek. Hamady was good friends with James Holly, the founding dean of The Evergreen State College Library and namesake of our Rare Books Room.

The Rare Books Room is open for drop-in visits 6 days a week during certain hours, or you can book an appointment or class visit via phone or email. Learn more at https://libguides.evergreen.edu/rarebooks

Upcoming Events

Evergreen Student Engagement / Voter Hub

In partnership with the Thurston County Elections Office, we are pleased to again offer this student engagement / voter hub around this year’s elections. Aimed at students but open to anyone, we will have staff on hand to help answer questions, register to vote, download ballots, and more.

This is a non-partisan service dedicated to increasing student engagement around voting and elections. Not sure if or where you are registered to vote? No problem! Come by and we can help you figure it all out!

The Voter Hub is located in the library, visible right as you enter, and will be open the following hours:

  • Friday, November 3 & Monday, November 6: 10am – 4pm;
  • Tuesday, November 7 (Election Day): 8am – 8pm.

Puget Sound Book Artists’ Exhibition: Open Case Events

These two in-person events will be your best opportunity to see the books up close, out of their cases, and meet the artists who made them! Both events will take place in the library’s 2nd floor classroom, LIB 2302d.

  • Open Case #1: Sunday, November 5, 1pm – 3pm
  • Open Case #2: Monday, November 13, 2pm – 4pm

These events are open to the public. Visitor parking is free on Sundays. You can learn more about the PSBA Exhibit here.

Writers’ Open Mic Night

Our most popular event! Come one, come all to our quarterly Writers' Open Mic Night co-hosted by The Evergreen Library and Writing Center. This event takes place on Thursday, December 7, from 5pm – 7pm in the Library Underground.

This in-person event will be an entirely open mic with no scheduled performers. Show up early to sign in and perform your poetry, music, storytelling, comedy, performance art, or anything you have written.

Don’t forget to bring your books, zines, CDs, and other merch! There will be a staffed writers' table for folks to browse during the break.

Research Assistance and more!

Ask a librarian, we’re here to help! Library staff can assist students, faculty, staff, and community members at any stage of the research process:

  • Develop research topics and refine search strategies
  • Find information in a variety of subject areas and formats
  • Evaluate information for relevance, credibility, and impact
  • Learn to manage and organize citations

New in the Library!

The Rare Books Room has been completely renovated. Come in and see our new space!

New equipment to check out at the circulation desk! Along with Chromebooks, we now also have webcams, portable DVD drives, graphing calculators, and noise-cancelling headphones.

Our three media rooms have all been refreshed with new technology, including new 4k televisions, soundbars, and DVD/Bluray/4k players.

Not new, but still cool!

We make an effort to purchase all required course materials for all courses. Some of these are in print, some in electronic formats. We can also (often) find print copies from other libraries that check out for the whole quarter; just come in and ask.

Our collection of tabletop games, including board games, story games, and RPGs continues to grow with nearly 600 titles available to check out. Games check out for a week but can be renewed as many times as you like.

Something you think we should have that isn’t already in our collection? Use our Purchase Request Form to let us know and, most of the time, we’ll buy it!
