How Do I...

This guide provides short tutorials on using resources and services at The Evergreen State College Library.

Use the Microfilm Reader

  1. Locate the microfilm that you want to use. Microfilm is located in the metal cabinets on the ground floor of the library, and all records can be searched in the Library Catalog.
  2. Take the roll of microfilm to the main floor of the library. The microfilm reader is attached to one of the public access computers near the library entrance.
  3. Log on to the computer and turn on the microfilm machine (power button on back).
  4. The microfilm software (PowerScan2000) should automatically open on the desktop. If not, open manually from desktop.
  5. The software will ask which type of microform you're using; select 35mm
  6. Pull out the tray on the microfilm reader. Instructions for loading the microfilm should appear on the computer screen. See below for images and text descriptions of these instructions.
  7. Use the arrows at the bottom of the viewing screen to navigate through the roll of film.
  8. Use the Adjust panel to alter the orientation, contrast, brightness, zoom, etc.
  9. Use the Output panel to save images from the microfilm. Most patrons have the best luck with the Scan to Drive #2 option. Despite the USB drive icon, this option does allow to save to the computer.
  10. If you use an email account to send files, make sure to log out of the email account if you're using the public computer log-in.

How to load the film into the reader

1. Pull the bottom tray forward all the way. You'll notice that the top pane of glass separates from the bottom pane of glass.

2. Load the roll of film on the left reel with the film rolling clockwise. Pull the film down the right side of the reel.

3. Feed the film under the far-left roller and over the roller to the right so that it's ready to feed onto the glass.

4. Pull the film between the top and bottom panes of glass.

5. Feed the film over the first roller and under the far-right roller. Then feed it up the left side of the reel, mirroring the process from the other side.

6. Insert the film into the slot on the reel so that it catches and holds. Push the tray back into place so that the top and bottom panes of glass return to their original positions.
